Oh Mobile Phone

Phones, they have always been a part of my life, I remember vividly as a child trying to ring my Gran who was at speed dial 9 and accidently phoning 999 instead. The operator was so angry and I couldn’t work out what I had done wrong to end up with the wrong person.

Going into my teen years, I got double the phone usage as not only did I have access to my parents’ home phone, but mobiles also stated to become more popular and affordable for all.

Thinking back, I have had a very varied history when it comes to mobiles. My first one was a Nokia 5510 and I think it must have been about 1999 when I got it. I remember carrying it around in my blazer pocket at school, the weight of it making one side droop down.

We would all compare game scores on snake and shop for random accessories such as aerials that flashed when someone phoned you, oh how cool we were back then.

After I left school I went through a variety of different models, I particularly remember my first ever camera phone, it was a Sony Ericsson and you had to attach the camera at the bottom whenever you took a photo.

It was awful, the pictures so grainy and I don’t think the screen showed many colours at all. But oh I loved that phone – it meant I could take photos where ever I went.

These days, those phones seem laughable, especially compared to the iPhone 6s I now own, but while most of us can easily think of the advances in mobile technology we seem to forget about how different home phones are as well.

HiHelloHello takes you on a quick tour of home phone ring tones, as well as what was top of the charts in that year. It was actually strange to hear all the different styles of ring tones – who knew we had gone through so many sounds.

With technology advancing as quickly as it does, I wonder what mobiles will be like in another 15 years time.

What was your first mobile phone?
